I don’t know whether to laugh or cry about this.  Mostly it makes me want to cry, but what I mostly end up doing is laughing.  However, it is not a joyful laugh.  It is the result of being so angry and baffled and speechless all at once that I don’t know what else to do, and there’s not much else I can do… I had to stop reading and put the article down, I was getting so upset.  It just seems so ignorant and poorly thought-out (if it was given any thought at all!)  It’s pretty clear that the author hasn’t had any sort of education or even informed discussion at all in the field of gender or women’s studies, which is all the more frustrating that this was published in the university’s newspaper… It amazes and saddens me that people still think like this and believe that these are valid(?!?!) arguments.

Today, I skipped my geology class in favor of sitting out on the quad avec mes amis. I brought my philosophy text out to try to study, but that was a false pretense. Nothing was going to get done out there except socializing, relaxing, and of course some people-watching. :o) Hanging out in the sunny, warm, breezy weather with friends coming and going, and snippets of multiple conversations floating in the air; it was just what I needed. The weather was absolutely gorgeous; it was just too good to pass up. It had better be here to stay, or I will not be a happy camper.

rideme.jpgGlobal “No Drive Day” took place this past Sunday, but on campus today, the JMU Green Team organized our own version of the event. It was pretty sweet – we gave out t-shirts, refreshments, and raffle tickets to all sorts of goodness. 🙂 I’m not going to lie, the t-shirt was definitely a motivating factor for me to volunteer for this, although I probably would have done so anyway. The front of it has the graphic at the right on it (except the colors are reversed – the t-shirt is white and the graphic is navy blue), and on the back, it reads “Alternative Transportation is Easy.” Cute! haha, I really like it.
I’m going to jump the gun a bit and say that it was a success, although we’ll discover the truth of that statement once the data from the car counters is analyzed. I was out there bright and early this morning at 7:30 (on about three hours of sleep, no less) in one of the parking lots to help direct HOVs to prime parking spots reserved for them. It was a little discouraging at first to see that virtually every car that entered the parking lot was single-occupancy, but I rationalized that it was early in the morning and a lot of people don’t have class until later on, and that there are plenty of other parking lots on campus, so its possible that just by chance, the carpoolers are going to those lots instead… right? And it was funny to see people’s guilty or confused reactions to our “No Drive Day →” sign. Although one group of carpoolers thought we were protesting for them not to use the lot (I guess excitedly jumping and waving could be misconstrued as protesting…?), so I ran over to the clubhouse to paint the backside with a clearer message: “HOV Parking →”
All in all, it was a lot more fun than I expected. Companionship and coffee didn’t hurt, either. 🙂

On March 14, 2008, JMU is celebrating its centennial anniversary! (They call it a birthday).  Anyways, the school and various organizations have planned events all week, ranging from speakers and exhibits to debates, dedications, and other various festivities.

Yesterday’s special event was a photo of JMU students and faculty on the quad, forming a ‘100’.  I went (obvi!), and I’m so glad I did.  I think it’s really cool that I got to be a part of something that is going to be commemorated forever!  You can look at the pictures here, and I’ll try to upload ones that I’ve edited to highlight my approximate location in the picture soon – I was inside the last zero (purple), on the far right border.

After the photo was taken from a little plane which flew over several times, there was, of course, a mad rush for the cake, cookies, popcorn and soda that awaited us after our strenuous endeavor. 😉
